I have done business with Latham and I can recommend his products!
Burn In Designs just added another building to the Rock Ridge line, Carolina's Bookstore (WRR-CBS01 $45). It is worth noting that Latham uses plywood instead of MDF/Hardboard which avoids the dreaded splayed corner syndrome so common to MDF. Latham is a detail oriented sort of fellow, so the interiors have removable bookcases, a sales counter w/ register, and a staircase going up to the second floor. Suitable for wargaming or RPGs, be it the old west, steampunk, or pulp genres.

Now personally I have never had an interest in Steampunk gaming...however I do appreciate ingenious designs that catch my eye. With that in mind, behold the Fredrick Class Airship from Crossover Miniatures! The airship with the display stand come in at $129 (USD) which seems a bit pricey to my eye. The model is scaled to work with 28mm figures and is certainly going to catch the eye on the game table. It weighs just a tad under 4 pounds but an undetermined length...it is listed xx cm long and xx cm high.
I haven't done business with Crossover Miniatures, their range seems to be very eclectic. If you have done business with them or know more about their products please feel free to sound off in the comments. Fantasy Arc is a US company that manufactures laser cut terrain, they cover three scales at present, 28mm, 10mm and 6mm. Today I would like to focus on their 28mm line known as Bug Hunt Corridors...or more precisely their new Bug Hunt Locations! There are 7 locations, the Armoury, Bridge, Bug Hunter's Ship, Escape Pod, Engine Room, Hibernation Room and Laboratory. Individually they run $17.99 (USD) or you can get all 7 for $99.99 (USD). While these are obviously meant as replacements for AVP: The Hunt Begins, they could just as well be utilized in any number of different games, and not just wargames. If you run Star Wars, Stars without Number, Traveler, even cyberpunk games like Shadowrun (3rd edition would be my preference) could easily make use of this terrain.
If you have the money, they have the Bug Hunter's Box Set...which is going to give you an awful lot of terrain (albeit at a heft price tag...$459.99) With only 6 days to go on Green Ronin Publishing's Kickstarter for Book of the Righteous they are just a bit shy of their pledge goal of $25,000. With your help though, they can easily hit the mark and then some! This is a revision of the 2002 book that Green Ronin published for 3rd Edition. Like the original, this has a full pantheon of gods, their churches, worshipers and those who proselytize for it. This time around the book is going to be full color (with new art) and hardbound with a PDF. An initial page count of 256 pages but depending on stretch goals that could very well increase.
You can find out more details here. Isn't it time for you...to find your faith? Maybe you need a break from playing on with your regular terrain. Perhaps you are starting out and want something that really stands out. Knights of Dice have created a line laser cut MDF scenery...Chinatown. This line of terrain, 28mm scale, is loaded with tons of details and not just merely etched into the surface. Viv, has seen to it that there is plenty of raised surface details! First up, we have the Jade Kingdom... I could drone on...but frankly those pics speak for more eloquently than I. Perhaps, you might want to check out the Golden Dragon Inn... In both instances these buildings have an additional floor that can be purchased to increase your vertical presence. A staple is the Chinatown Gate, which you can see themes and variations of throughout South East Asia, including Bangkok. For myself, I can see adding these buildings to my collection for Shadowrun (3rd Edition) or some modern wargame rules set (as yet to be decided upon). I think that this would be perfect terrain for a Yu Jing board for a game of Infinity.
Let me know what you think! At this moment in time there are two companies that I know of that are producing 28mm (1/50 scale) vehicle for modern wargames...Empress Miniatures (which has the largest line) and Spectre Miniatures (two styles of SUV). While the selection is not as broad as I would like, they both produce (what I consider to be) the best vehicles around...regardless of genre. I recently got a HUMVEE w/ Weapons Station and M-ATV w/ .50 cal M2 from Empress Miniatures. The M-ATV pictures almost do justice to the miniature that I am holding in my hands. The HUMVEE pics don't really capture just how good of a cast that it is. If my paint jobs are passable I will post up some better pictures. The quality of the casts and the crispness of all the details is impressive. While initially reticent do to the price tag of these models I decided to bite the bullet and see how good they really are. I am very glad that I took that leap of faith! The vehicle that I got from Spectre Miniatures was the Urban SUV... What a gorgeous sculpt with an incredibly clean casting. More importantly they really thought about how to make assembly as painless as possible with this model. Again though, the painted image doesn't really do justice to this model, which is merely my opinion mind you. If you happen to know of any other companies that produce 28mm (1/50 scale) vehicles I would love to hear about them! In addition to the Urban SUV from Spectre Miniatures I purchases a good selection of their miniatures... Their minis are equally impressive, loaded with details, accurately modeled weapons and gear. They are an easy recommendation in terms of quality, the hardest part is waiting for them to arrive. I added a handful of minis from Empress Miniatures to the vehicle order... It is extremely pleasing to be able to give a full endorsement of a company's products, I would much rather say nice things than complain about problems. Empress Miniatures produces some incredible minis and I look forward to doing business with them in the future.
If you know of other companies that you think I should check out, please leave a comment below. 4Ground is yet another British company that produces laser cut MDF scenery. What sets them apart is that they offer their buildings already pre-colored (along the lines of pre-painted but not quite...IMHO). One should not take that as a rebuke merely an observation with a critical eye. First up we have North Point Tower. This 6 story building, has a footprint of 10 1/2" by 7 3/4", standing an impressive 21 1/4" high with a price tag of £105 (or $150.77 USD). Interior sections can be accessed for play, although they are not pre-colored. Next we have South Point View, a 4-story building with a 9 1/2" by 9 1/2" footprint standing a respectable 10 1/4" tall. Priced at £80 ($114.87 USD) it features some very good looking details. Finally we have Grant House a 3-story building, with a £70 ($100.51 USD) price tag, A foot print of 11 1/2" by 6 1/2" and standing 11 1/2" tall, it is the smallest of the three buildings that they currently offer in this line. I would have to say that the level of detail that they are building into all of these pieces is impressive and serves to make them stand out.
When I speak about visual impact there are three elements that I am focusing on. Height/depth being one of those components and, without a doubt, one that is going to grab a viewers attention first and foremost. The next most important component, for me, is detailing on the scenery. Seeing a building with a gas main, electric meter, mold/moss at the base, asphalt with repaired cracks, a flatten aluminum can, grass between the cracks of sidewalk, etc., etc., all are the sort of detailing that makes a game table come to life. Finally, you have color and this is one of the toughest aspects of wargaming scenery construction to get right. I have seen plenty of scenery that looks as if it was just painted with vibrant colors, without any fading or dust. Take a stroll or drive and see how many buildings look as if they were just put up. At the same point in time color is a terrific way to grab the attention of a viewer. So what does that have to do with Multiverse Gaming and their line of Grafitti Decals? These decals hit two out of the three components of visual impact...detail and color. Painting on grafitti can be hugely time consuming and technically very challenging even to an experienced painter. These decals offer up plenty of color to make your buildings standout. After they have been applied and allowed to dry you may want tone down and tie them into the building by spraying an extremely thinned glaze of white with an airbrush. Think of it as applying a filter in Photoshop to make elements appear to be part of the same photo. I personally like the fact that their decals are vibrant, as I find it is easier to tone down than to increase said vibrancy. They do offer one set of black and white decals which are going to work for those times you want greater contrast. If you have modern or near future wargaming scenery that needs a bit of punch when it comes to visual impact, Multiverse Gaming has you covered!
Sometimes it is not about placing a gigantic centerpiece of scenery on the table, the small pieces which serve as objectives, cover, or just to help with suspension of disbelief are just as important. Burn In Designs is offering their Modern Searchlight Kit (MSLK-001 $20). This 2 piece kit has the searchlight and the generator. If you want to jazz it up even more you can get a Powered Play lighting kit...since Latham designed it with that in mind. Next, we have the Communications Platform Kit (MCAK-001 $20)! The dish rotates and tilts...adding to the functionality of this striking piece.
Word has it that he will be adding a Missile, Heavy Mortar, and Pulse Weapon Platforms soon! Zen Terrain, best known for their Infinity friendly terrain is branching out with the Mead Hall. Measuring a very respectable 13 inches, nearly 7 inches wide and tall, it has a table footprint that is going to be the centerpiece of your Viking-esque table. It comes unpainted and requires assembly which they categorize as medium to hard in difficulty. The interiors are accessible as well... It is the sort of hall where one might find Ragnar quietly watching the assembled throng from the throne.
Having done business with Zen Terrain on a handful of occasions I can recommend them fully! |
